Facebook username grabbing

1 Jul

Since Sunday 28th June all Facebook pages can have a fixed username as long as they have more than 100 fans. I noticed a couple of libraries grabbing theirs, so got in fast to nab some good ones for The Careers Group pages (http://www.facebook.com/thecareersgroup amongst others). Got yours yet? Here’s something to think about first…

While it is great to finally have a fixed, short and neat URL to direct people to, I don’t understand why Facebook insists:

You will not be able to edit or transfer this this username once you set it.

Apparently this will apply, even if the new username you desire is available. This blog post highlighted the problem of name changes to me, that people will not be able to change their username if they take their partner’s name. Similarly, if your university or library service re-brands, well… tough. It seems a very short-sighted policy. Maybe it will change in future? Until then, choose carefully…
